Celebrations - Spotlighting Student Accomplishments (7/10/09) - Caston Schools have much to be proud of. Typically each School Board meeting begins with "Celebrations" as shared by the  Superintendent. These include individual student and staff accomplishments as well as those by groups. Some of the  celebrations will be highlighted on this page. All celebrations will be found in the official Board Minutes. The date below is that of the particular Board meeting. This page will continually be added to.

NEW 1/24/12 - Congratulations to Mr. Byrn and the Comet Band on the outstanding partnership that brought members of the Purdue University Band to sit/play side by side at the basketball games January 13th! What a great experience! Congratulations to Mr. Byrn and the Comet Band for their presentation at the IMEA Conference in Fort Wayne. They demonstrated the use of videoconferencing in the rehearsal atmosphere with composer Tom Davis! Caston Athletic Director Debb Stevens has announced that Caston has 3 football players named to the IFCA Academic All State Football team – Kent Burton, Kyle Harvey, and Graham Redweik! Congratulations to these student athletes for their hard work in the classroom and on the field! Congratulations to Graham Redweik and Kyle Harvey for winning their weight classes at the MWC tourney recently and Graham for being named MVW! Thank you Honeywell Center/Ft. Wayne Philharmonic for bringing the Meadowlark String Quartet to Caston Elementary recently!

NEW 1/10/12 - Caston Elementary Principal Mrs. Cindy Douglass recently learned that the elementary has been named to the list of InSAI 2012 “Top Gainer” Schools. The Top Gainer award is presented to schools that have 1) prepared a school improvement plan that meets ASAI’s standards for school improvement planning, and 2) are in the top category for PL221 as determined by the Indiana Department of Education based on a) student pass rates in the ISTEP + tests and End-of-Course Assessments, b) improvement on the pass rates, and c) federal AYP determinations. Congratulations Mrs. Douglass, staff, committee, and students! Caston Jr-Sr High Principal, Mr. Adam Strasser, has announced that, all 21 students who took the ACP writing course for IU credit earned their credit. Great job students and Mrs. Shultz! Caston Elementary teacher, Mrs. Jill Strasser is excited to announce The Honeywell Center is sponsoring an artist residency program on January 25 at 1:30. Bruce Langston is an illustrator, and he leads the children through drawing. They will all be drawing at the same time. Caston Athletic Director Miss Debb Stevens recently received a complimentary note from an official which reads, “I want to compliment Caston’s Jr. High boys. I appreciate the sportsmanship, hard work and respect they displayed against Logansport. Their hard work makes our job even more enjoyable.” Very nice representation of Caston so thank you players, coaches, and parents!

NEW 12/6/11 - Congratulations to: Trevor Hoover named by AP Writer’s 1st team All State Football 2011 Class 1A Football. Graham Redweik named by IFCA Defensive Linemen 1st team All-State. 

11/1/11 - Congratulations to Caston Elementary student Paley Scott for being a winner in the Pharos-Tribune Scary Story Contest! Midwest Conference All Conference Football Team selections were Jeremy Gonzalez, Trevor Hoover, Corey Moss, Graham Redweik, and Guilherme Souza with Chance Ault, Mitch Kerr, and Brandon Wilkinson being named Honorable Mention. Brittany Offenberger was selected as Honorable Mention in Volleyball.
Seniors Trevor Hoover and Allen Russell will be in-studio guests of former IU basketball star and radio personality Dan Dakich on Tuesday, November 8th from 2:00-3:00 p.m. on WIBC (1070). Caston Jr.-Sr. High is hosting a Veteran’s Day Convocation on Friday, November 11th at 9:25
in the gymnasium.

10/18/11 - Caston freshman Seth Cousins had a terrific season and finished in the top 15 of sectionals earning him the right to compete in the cross-country regional at CMA. Matt Paschen, former Caston student, has a master’s degree in Entomology from Purdue. He recently came and shared with the 1st graders and brought many insect specimens from all over the world. He also told about what he had to do to go to college to do the kind of work he wanted to do. Received a note of appreciation for the positive attitudes and the sportsmanship displayed in North Manchester last week at a junior high soccer match. Liberty Township Fire Department came for Fire Safety Day.

10/4/11 - Congratulations to Athletic Director Debb Stevens for receiving the District I AD’s Award – The Charles Maas Distinguished Service award. Congratulations to the Caston Sixth Grade Volleyball team and Coach Jellison on being the first Sixth Grade team to win the Cass County Volleyball Tournament.

9/20/11 - Recently Caston collected over $4,000 toward the backpack program and several coats and many canned food items. Congratulations and thank you to anyone who participated in any of these efforts. Caston Athletic Director, Ms. Stevens, received a note from a recent football officiating crew commending the varsity team on their display of sportsmanship. We are proud of these students for setting a great example for the younger Comets. Caston High School Band participated with Purdue and 27 other high schools by playing and marching with the Purdue Band on Saturday, September 17th during the Purdue football game.

8/23/11 - Thanks to Woodlawn Hospital who provided concussion testing on more than 50 student athletes. Thanks to many of the volleyball players who helped place telephones and several football players who painted the curbs.

7/5/11 - Caston Junior – Senior High School recently received an award for being one of the top twelve schools in the State to increase its graduation rate from 2008-2009 to 2009-2010 school years. 

6/21/11 - Ten Caston FFA members participated in the State FFA Convention June 13 – 15; Derek Berkshire, Hali Berry, Kent Burton, Emily Douglass, Kyle Harvery, Blain Hizer, Jacob Miller, Katelyn Miller, Christen Sailors and Olivia Thomson. Hali Berry and Emily Douglass competed in the State Marketing Career Development Event where they placed 2nd. Jada Powlen was recognized as the Winning State Fruit Production Proficiency. Kent Burton, Blain Hizer, Elizabeth Mettler, Sarah McManus and Jada Powlen received their Hoosier FFA Degree, which is the highest honor an Indiana FFA Member can receive. On Wednesday we were recognized as a Top Ten Chapter in the Monsanto Chapter Challenge. As well as being named as a Silver Emblem Chapter in the State and will be submitted to National FFA in the coming weeks. Jada Powlen’s proficiency will also be submitted for National Competition.

6/7/11 - Congratulations to the Class of 2011 and Valedictorian Miss Jada Powlen and Salutatorian Miss Morgan Herrold. Mr. Byrn has announced that Purdue University has selected the Comet Band as a Partner next year. Among some of the activities are a side by side concert, one of the Purdue Athletic Bands will be at a home Caston basketball game and the Comet Band will participate in Band Day at Purdue in September. Mrs. Seuferer has announced the new Fulton County Youth Leadership Academy (FCYLA) members as: Katelyn Miller, Jordon Moss, and Zachary Smith. Mrs. Butcher has recently been notified that the Caston FFA has been recognized as a Silver Emblem Chapter in the State. (Meaning we are one of the top 20 Chapters in the State of Indiana) and will be submitted to the National FFA for consideration as a Top Chapter in the Nation. The FFA also says thank you to those that voted for them in the Chapter Challenge as they were one of the Top 10 Chapters in Indiana and will be receiving money for National FFA Convention. Caston Jr-Sr High Principal Mr. Strasser recently announced that Caston increased our student pass rate in every subject area during the End of Course Assessments. Biology increased by 9%, Algebra increased by 11%, and English 10 increased by 6%. Recent Caston graduate Caleb Brown has been named the winner of the 2010-2011 SUCCEED High School Business Plan Competition and received a $1,000 scholarship to Ivy Tech. Caleb’s winning business plan was “Midwest Muscle Cars”. 

5/17/11 - Caston Athletic Director Miss Debra Stevens has announced that Caston High School golfers Boston Blackman and Conner Martin earned All-Conference last week at the MWC Golf Meet. Brant Hartman has been named “Athlete of the Year”. Wil Holloway,
Alex Herd, and Haley Markley are new members of the “Hall of Fame”. Caston Jr. High student Kim Cress won the discus at the MWC Jr. High Track Meet. Caston Elementary was a surprise, but elated winner of the $10,000 at the Healthy Kids Awards at Logansport Memorial Hospital. The award is through the LMH, LMH Foundation, and the McTaggart Trust. Caston Elementary had the highest BMI percentage decrease (1 full percent) of all the county schools to win the prize. Congratulations to Principal Mrs. Douglass, Nurse Mrs. Smith, Physical Education Teacher Mrs. Brash, and all the students and staff for this outstanding recognition.

5/3/11 - At every mid-term, Caston Jr. High has a motivator for students to work towards. This nine weeks the goal was one or fewer missing assignments and zero discipline referrals. 83 students met their goal and were rewarded by getting to attend a swim party at Pioneer’s
pool. Great job students. The Caston High School Student Council and sponsor Mrs. Seuferer would like to thank all who donated, allowed students to be excused from class to donate/work, and assisted with the organization of the blood drive. This group had 59 attempted donors and collected 50 units of blood. The goal was to collect 50 units of blood to earn a scholarship for a Caston senior, which they did. Caston High School math teacher Mr. Buczkowski is pleased to announce results from the Math Contest held at Pioneer April 28. Caston finished 1st in Comprehensive, 3rd in Algebra and Calculus. Overall, Caston finished 3rd. Individuals in the top 10: Braden Moss 10th in Algebra; Zach Smith 1st in Comprehensive; Tucker Shriver 3rd in Comprehensive; Kent Burton 10th in Comprehensive; and Jada Powlen 4th in Calculus. Caston Athletic Director Debb Stevens announced today that Caston has been chosen to host the Indiana Elite North vs. South Baseball Challenge on July 22nd and July 23rd. In addition, Coach Mollenkopf was chosen as a coach. We are also hopeful/expect to have a few Caston baseball players involved as well. Caston Jr. High recently competed in Academic competition. With 45 teams competing overall, they placed in the following: Science - 12th, Social Studies - 16th, Math - 35th, English - 5th, Interdisciplinary - 13th. The Caston Music Department recently conducted two spring events. The jr-sr high spring concert was held at McHale Auditorium and it was an excellent evening. It was a
perfect setting for the premiere of  "Were You There" and to honor longtime Caston music educator Mr. Berdine. The elementary spring production was also held recently in the gymnasium and it was another outstanding performance. 

4/19/11 - Caston Elementary School raised $5,829.15 during a recent Jump Rope for Heart event. The top three earners were Caleb Dearinger ($295.00), Carter See ($273.00), and Krysta Schanlaub ($200.00). Thank you and congratulations to all students and instructor Mrs. Brash. Caston Elementary School fifth-grader Bailey Shultz recently placed fifth overall in the regional Scripps Spelling Bee at Kokomo in March. Bailey was actually the highest placing elementary student. The following eleven Caston Elementary students recently placed as winners in the Logansport youth art show and competition: McKenzie Bennett, Lance Newgent, Kiara Weise, Jarod Beck, Isabel Newcom, Megyn Gamble, Wyatt Brumett, Dakota Oldfather, Mia Zimpleman, McKenzie Paschen, and Hanna Hoover. Adrianna Dague, Caston Elementary sixth-grader, recently placed first in the “Food for Thought-Our Food, Our Farmers” essay contest in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grade division.
Caston High School junior Graham Redweik was recently notified he has been selected to attend the Summer Leaders Seminar at West Point in June. Caston music teacher Mr. Byrn recently learned that the high school band has been approved to demonstrate an iChat session. The band will travel to Fort Wayne to demonstrate a live ICHAT for the members of the Indiana Music Educators Association this coming January. This is quite an honor for Caston and the Band Students as not many bands get to present at IMEA.

3/15/11 - Caston Elementary Principal Mrs. Douglass and sixth-grade teacher, Miss Button were recently notified that Caston students completed 949 “Threads”, solved 22,490 problems and spent 980 hours on the Apangea system. The students completed 331 hours of home usage and gained 441 equivalent math classes of added instruction time. Congratulations and great job. Miss Button also took two math teams (37 students) to compete at Franklin Elementary in Logansport. Caston team 2 scored 20 points out of 28, for first in their division. Pioneer scored 19 points for second, and Caston team 1 scored 18 points for third place. Caston High School recently learned that senior Jada Powlen earned Girl’s Basketball Academic All-State honors. Caston Athletic Director Debb Stevens has announced the following students have earned Midwest Conference Winter Academic All Conference: Kyle Harvey and Graham Redweik, Wrestling; Brittney Offenberger, Jada Powlen, Maggie Daily, and Morgan Herrold, Girl’s Basketball; and Trevor Hoover, Boy’s Basketball. Caston basketball players Alex Herd and Trevor Hoover were recently named to the MWC Boy’s Basketball All Conference. Brant Hartman was an Honorable Mention. Special congratulations to Alex for being named MWC Player of the Year and to Head Coach Ben Snyder for being named MWC Coach of the Year. Junior-Senior High InSAI Community Council, Chair: Jennifer Richter, core group, after-school tutoring, teachers @$35/hr, assisted by community volunteers. Appreciation luncheon for all staff including both schools, cafeteria and bus drivers, spearheaded by staff member Angie Douglass who was assisted by several community members.

2/28/11 - Recently Caston High School students Erika Reffitt and Justin Cousins both received a Gold Rating at the State Solo and Ensemble competition for their vocal solos. Caston was recently made aware that Caston High School junior Graham Redweik was named to the Academic All-State Wrestling Team. Caston Boy’s Varsity Basketball Team recently earned a share of the Midwest Conference title by defeating Winamac in the last regular season game. Pay-It-Forward update: The PTO would like to thank everyone who helped make the Morning Star Girls Home & Emmaus Homeless Shelter supply drive a big success. Because of your donations, a total of 527 items will be taken to them this week. They will also be receiving a check from us for money collected during Popcorn Friday and during the drive. Congratulations to Mrs. Rush’s class for bringing in 99 items. Second place went to Ms.Sherrard’s class with 72 items. And Coming in a very close third with 69 items was Mrs. DePyper’s class. That means the third graders alone brought in 240 products. Nice job 3rd grade. Other placings were: 4th grade – Mrs. Baker’s class with 42 items; 5th grade – Mrs. Skinner’s class with 38 items; and 6th Grade – a 3-way tie for Mrs. Burkhart, Mr. Chandler, and Miss Button’s classes with 25 items each.

2/15/11 - Miss Button’s IMS class using the Apangea math program placed 2nd in the region and 9th overall in the state. Additionally, Trent Howard placed 5th among the Top 25 students. The elementary held their Spelling Bee and had the following winners: 4th Grade Champion, Destiny Ray; 5th Grade Champion, Bailey Shultz; 6th Grade Champion, Ellei Kay; Overall Winner, Bailey Shultz and Runner-Up, Abby Rimpler. Graham Redweik recently competed in the Merrillville Semi-State competition. The 7th Grade Girl’s Basketball Team recently won the Columbia Tourney and are 5-1. Athletic Director Debb Stevens was recently notified that Caston was chosen to host a IHSAA Softball Sectional as well as a IHSAA Baseball Regional. Caston’s 1st Sectional winners from 20 years ago were recognized during half time of the Caston-Rochester Boys Basketball games. Nine of the 12 team members plus three of the coaches were present.

1/6/11 - Mrs. Shultz has indicated that the new ACP English class had 12 students this past semester, 10 of them decided to take it for credit and all 10 or those students earned their 3 credits through IU. A big thank you to Mrs. Musselman and Mrs. Smith who ran two CPR training sessions on January 3rd. For a nominal cost to each staff member, between 40-45 staff members became newly certified or renewed their CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automatic external defibrillator) training during the day. A big thank you also to Logansport Memorial Hospital for their help with all the needed equipment.

12/14/10 - Miss Button received word that her class is one of the Top 30 classes in the state in the running for the Hoosier Math Cup! The class has passed a considerable number of threads per student and is doing some amazing work on Apangea! The contest ends December 21st. Caston Elementary student Hayden Tomlinson has been selected for the IMEA Elementary Honor Choir and will perform at the IMEA Convention in January. He is one of 140 students across the state chosen for this honor by a taped audition process.  Caston Elementary recently received the honor of being recognized as a high growth school for Math!

11/2/10 - For the first time, the Midwest Conference has announced Academic All-Conference athletes. Students must be a junior or senior and must have a minimum of 3.5/4.0 and top 25% of their class. Congratulations to the following Caston fall athletes for their selection as an Academic All-Conference athlete: Jada Powlen--golf; Emily Douglass, Morgan Herrold, and Brittney Offenberger--volleyball; Kent Burton, Zach Cowell, Kyle Harvey, Trevor Hoover, and Graham Redweik--football; Maggie Daily and Kara Smith--cross country. Congratulations to Justin Cousins for being named to the 2010 All Cass County Cross Country Team.  Congratulations to Max Foreman and Tyler Henderson who were selected to the East/West soccer team and will play at Park Tudor High School on November 6th.

10/19/10 - Congratulations to the following elementary students who were recently inducted into the Elementary National Honor Society: Kennedy Ault, Arieon Burns, Ryoann Doan, Erin Frye, Kaylah Gearhart, Holley Hoff, Hanna Hoover, Alyssa Hubenthal, Brandi McCroskey, Kendra Pugh, Matt Rans, Abby Rimpler, Carrie Sailors, Jayda Shafer, Bailey Shultz, Jacob Taylor, Miranada Thorton, and Brianna Young. Congratulations to these students and parents for their accomplishment. Also, thank you to the sponsors Teresa Button, Blake Mollenkopf, and Nicole Monical. Congratulations to the following Caston athletes for their recent recognition: Max Foreman was selected to play in the East/West soccer game at Park Tudor on November 6th; Justin Cousins received All-Conference honors for cross county; and Kara Smith received Honorable Mention also in cross county.

9/21/10 - Congratulations to the Boy’s Junior High Cross County Team as they are the 2010 Cass County Champions. Special congratulations to Seth Cousins for being the individual champion. Team members include Darin Chew, Seth Cousins, Dalton Daily, Ben Moss, Matt Moss, and Andrew Smith and they are coached by Mr. Vince Huffman.

9/7/10 - Memorial Hospital’s gift of the sign in front of the school. Marjorie Kime scholarship gift. Kindergarten bus safety program was successful thanks to bus driver Jerry Baker and Senior Trooper Randy McPike.

8/4/10 - As a result of excelling at the state judging level, the Caston FFA program was able to move to the national level. The Caston FFA received a 2 star ranking at the national level. 3 star is the highest honor an FFA group can receive. Thanks to Mrs. Butcher and students participating.

7/6/10 - The Caston FFA chapter was selected as one of the top 20 chapters in Indiana and was recognized for that accomplishment during its state FFA convention in June. Caston was named a Silver Emblem chapter. Caston FFA members include Hali Berry, Maggie Daily, Blain Hizer, Bryant Liming, Sarah McManus, Elizabeth Mettler, Katelyn Miller, Jacob Miller, Jada Powlen, Christen Sailors, Olivia Thomas and Paige Thomas. Kory Moudy was the state winner in swine production proficiency and earned the opportunity to submit his application to the national proficiency contest. Jada Powlen was the state runner-up in fruit production entrepreneurship proficiency. Megan Powell and Emily Sailors received their Hoosier FFA Degree, the highest honor an Indiana FFA member can receive. Sarah McManus and Elizabeth Mettler both ran for a district office. Sarah was elected District 2 sentinel. Paige Thomas vied for state office candidate which included three days of interviewing, a written test, current event and agricultural issue questions. Congratulations to all FFA students and sponsor Mrs. Cari Butcher.

6/15/10 - Congratulations to Boston Blackman for advancing to the Regional this year in golf. 

5/18/10 - Band Director Mr. Bryn and Band Officers Paige Thomas, Megan Herrold, and Christen Sailors made a presentation of a plaque to Superintendent Foster, as well as small plaques for each Board Member, in appreciation of the Board’s support of the commissioned music piece created for the Caston High School Band by Composer Stephen Melillo. Caston High School student Dana Miller will sing the national anthem at Victory Field at Indianapolis, IN on June 19 before the 2A state final baseball a game.

5/4/10 - The Midwest Conference Math Contest was held at Frontier on April 27th, Caston Jr-Sr. High students received the following honors: Jada Powlen - 10th in the Comprehensive division, Kent Burton - 9th in Algebra 2, and Zack Smith – 4th in Geometry. The Algebra team of Derek Berkshire, Haley Hoover, Tucker Shriver, Anthony Strain, and Jacob Williamson finished 2nd, with Tucker being the overall champion in Algebra. Congratulations to Kory Moudy and Jada Powlen for being the State Final 4 in their Proficiency Areas and we wish them will in their interviews. Caston 3rd graders recently won their first Cass County Bag contest with 2,839.20 pounds. The grand total collected from all of the schools was 7,406 pounds. The students and teachers wish to send a Big “Thank You” to everyone who helped them bring in all of those bags.

4/20/10 - Recently the jr-sr high art department competed in the County Art Show in Logansport. Caston won 14 awards (Logansport 11, Pioneer 13, and Lewis Cass 6) Great job. Congratulations to the following winners: Samantha Hale, Elizabeth Mettler, Meagan York, Breanna Nilson, Amanda Byrum, Aaron Byrum, Brenda Artero-Rios, Freya Theil, Emily See, Veronica Sheets, Matt Clupper, Misty Gearhart, Kurt Kellenburger, and Harleigh Waters. Caston music teacher Michelle Byrn has been notified that her master’s project is being published in Contributions to Music Education. This is a highly respected journal in the field of music education and the review process is rather rigorous. Congratulations Mrs. Byrn. 

3/16/10 - Congratulations to the Caston Elementary Math Bowl Team. The team won the Logansport Fairview competition. Their score was the top score out of the 10 schools present and the students received a gold medal for winning their division. Great job to the students and Miss Button.

3/1/10 - Caston Elementary recently hosted their annual Spelling Bee with the following participants: 4th Grade – Jacob Taylor, Jaden Zeider, Wesley York, Ryonn Doan, Riley Rigney, Makayla Banta, Elizabeth Suttton, Branden Kinser and Abby Rimpler; 5th Grade – Hayden Tomlinson, Carrie Sailors, Maddux Zeider, Brant Buczkowski, Angel Williams, Eli Douglass, Matthew Rans, Dalea Hubenthal, and Megan Evans; and 6th Grade – Devin Minneman, Preston Walker, Tori Rentschler, Garrett Brouyette, Kayla Brissette, Nate Callender, Addie Sarver, Luck Sutton and Kyle Spence. Abby Rimpler was 4th grade champion, Megan Evans was the 5th grade champion and overall winners were Kyler Spencer with Luke Sutton being the runner-up overall. Kyler will participate in the Scripps Regional spelling bee held on March 9th at IUK. Congratulations to all these students. Two Caston Elementary 5th graders placed in the Give Your Heart To The Community Essay Writing Contest sponsored by Cass County Community Foundation. Adrianna Dague won first place and will receive a $100 savings bond and Dalea Hubenthal won second place and will receive a $50 savings bond. Congratulations to these young writers. Caston High School student Danielle McPeek received a Gold Rating for her vocal solo at the ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Great job Danielle.

2/16/10 - Congratulations to Jada Powlen and Bryant Liming as both won their FFA District Proficiency Areas and will advance to the State. Recently at the ISSMA Instrumental Solo and Ensemble Contest Christen Sailors received a Gold award for her flute solo, Kara Smith received a silver award for her clarinet solo and Bryana Slisher received a silver award for her flute solo. Great job girls and Mr. Byrn. Also, this past Saturday Wil Holloway and David McMenamin participated in the Merrillville wrestling semi-state and represented Caston very well. Congratulations on an outstanding season to Wil, David, and all the team and coaches.

2/2/10 - Congratulations to Danielle McPeek for her Gold Award on her solo at ISSMA District Vocal Contest. She now advances to the state contest on February 20. Congratulations to Brett McManus on his Gold Award on his solo at ISSMA District Vocal Contest. He received a perfect score. Congratulations to the Comettes and Freya Thiel on their Silver Awards. Congratulations to Sectional Wrestling Champions: Dylan Berkshire and Wil Holloway. Also, we had three others qualify for the Regional: David McMenamin, Kyle Harvery, and Austin Ault.

1/21/10 - Congratulations to Caston Elementary 5th grader Emily Rowe and 6th grader Kylie Pugh who have been selected to participate in the All-State Elementary Honor Choir at the Indiana Music Educators Convention in Indianapolis. Thank you also to Mrs. Byrn for her efforts with these students. Mrs. Melinda Shultz has been inviting Caston graduates into her speech classroom with the goal of showing the students that they can be successful upon graduating from Caston. Additionally, Mrs. Shultz is hopeful that the students will learn how necessary and essential speech skills are in the “real” world.

12/15/09 - Mrs. Butcher has notified us that she has been approved to teach Agri Business Management through Vincennes University for this spring. Students enrolled in this class will receive the credit, as long as they pass the class. The student will be enrolled at VU and will have a transcript showing the credit.

11/17/09 - Congratulations to the Jr. High Spell Bowl team for placing third in a recent competition. Recently eight Caston students were inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Tri-M is the international honor society recognizing secondary music students for their musical ability, academic excellence, school involvement, and community service. Thenew members and officers of Caston Chapter 1823 are Danielle McPeek, President; Veronica Sheets, Vice-President; Chelsea Troyer, Secretary; Emily See, Treasurer; Megan Powell, Historian; Morgan Herrold, David McMenamin and Brenda Artero-Rios.

11/3/09 - Caston Elementary third-grader Mitchell Rans has been selected as the 3rd Grade Winner in the “Finish the Story…” contest sponsored by the Logansport Pharos-Tribune. Congratulations to Mrs. Paschen’s 7th and 8th grade students who participated in the Drug Free Essay Contest during Red Ribbon Week (sponsored by Four County of Logansport). This year’s topic was “Why I Shouldn’t Abuse Prescription Drugs.” Nine Caston students received the highest rating for essay writing criteria. The following students were also awarded a $10 Wal-Mart gift card: Dylan Hollar, Madison Taylor, Jessica Hardesty, Sarah Holt, Karly DeWitt, Madison Shultz, Derek Berkshire, Jenna Showley, and Brookelynn Rigsby. Caston High School football coach, Chris Ulerick was recently named Midwest Conference Coach of the Year.

10/20/09 - Caston Elementary sixth-grader Addie Sarver has been selected as one of 12 student reporters in the nation for Weekly Reader. Addie gave a short presentation to the Board, doing a great job. 

10/6/09 - The elementary held the first ever induction ceremony to the Elementary National Honor Society on Tuesday, October 6, 2009. 2009-2010 Average Daily Membership (ADM) count was 771.5. This was up 9 students from last year and 30 above state predictions. The .5 is the result of Kindergarten students being counted as .5. The ADM count was taken September 18, 2009. The actual membership on that date was: Elementary - 419 (Kindergarten counted as 1); Jr.-Sr. High - 387.

8/31/09 - Mr. Foster thanked Mr. Jerry Baker, bus driver and the State Police for the bus safety program provided to the kindergarten students. Miss Skylar Powlen was recently recognized for her Fruit Production Entreprenuership Proficiency that won State and was submitted to Nationals. She was selected as a Gold Emblem Proficiency. National FFA selects divides the entries into 3 award areas. Gold being the highest, Silver, and Bronze being the 1/3. She was not selected as a Final Four member, but did receive one of the highest honors in the FFA.

7/7/09 - Caston soccer player Preston Howard was presented the Mental Attitude Award @ the Indiana East-West Soccer 1A All-Star game held @ Blackford on June 25. This is a first for a Caston student and we are extremely proud of Preston!! Preston will continue playing soccer this fall as he will play for Trine University. Caston baseball player Ethan Zartman recently earned the Bill Jones Mental Attitude Award at the East-West All-Star baseball. Ethan was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI’s to lead the West to an 8-6 win. Ethan will continue his baseball career next year at Bethel College. Also, the West squad was coached by Caston coach and Caston Elementary teacher Blake Mollenkopf. Congratulations to both Ethan and Coach Mollenkopf. Six Caston FFA Members received the highest honor bestowed on an FFA member in the State of Indiana; the Hoosier FFA Degree. Members receiving their Hoosier Degree: Payton Daily, Anna Douglass, Kory Moudy, Jesse Reason, Paige Thomas, & Travis Powell.

6/2/09 - Athletic Director Ms. Debb Stevens proudly announced that for the 2008-09 seasons the athletes and coaches were awarded sportsmanship from the IHSSA.

5/19/09 - The National Honor Society inducted 6 new members (Frost Fry, James Laing, Megan Powell, Veronica Sheets, Caleb Siders, and Chelsea Troyer). The FFA Dairy CDE Team (Skylar Powlen, Jada Powlen, and Bryant Liming) placed 3rd in the State Contest recently and will advance to a National Contest this fall. Jada was 4th High Individual Overall and Skylar was 9th Individual Overall. The team competed against 31 other teams and 117 contestants.

5/6/09 - The High School Academic Super Bowl Regional was held recently and Caston placed first in Fine Arts, Social Studies, and Interdisciplinary, and second place in English giving them First Place Overall. Team members include: Emily Douglass, Mandi DePoy, Frost Fry, Logan Goff, Kyle Harvey, Amy Hathaway, Elias Jones, Madison Jones, James Laing, Rachel Laing, Brittany Offenberger, Erica Reffitt, Lee Waltz, and Carissa Wyatt. The Junior High Academic Super Bowl also competed recently and placed First Overall. In addition, the placements of three teams gained them Top Ten finishes in the State! The Science Team finished Third in the State. They will receive a plaque and individual medals. The Math Team placed Fourth in the State, while the Interdisciplinary Team placed Ninth in the State. The Math and I.D. teams will receive a team certificate of achievement. Team members include: Derek Berkshire, Jory Goff, Braxton Lee, Tierney Rentschler, Zach Smith, and Anthony Strain.

Thank you Mrs. Zentz! Caston third graders, with the help of our fellow Comets and community members, collected a total of 1,762.5 pounds of plastic bags to be recycled this school year. They were all given to the Cass County Solid Waste Management District to be sent to be made into decking boards (like Trex Decking).

4/9/09 - Congratulations to the elementary art students who recently received recognition at the Logansport Youth Art Show: Ally Weise, McKenzie Paschen, Hailey Hurtt, McKenzie Baldwin, Mike Rans, Ripley White, Kaleb Conrad, Shanteel Miranda, Michael Smith, Jamie Sailors, Matthew Rans, Sidney Berry, and Dustin Goforth. Great Job to them and teacher Mrs. Garber. FFA program has participated in many activities recently but special congratulations to Caston students who will compete at the State Leadership Career Development Events in June: Skylar Powlen, Travis Powell, Sarah McManus, Elizabeth Mettler, Megan Powell, and Emily Sailors.

3/17/09 - 2008-2009 Boy’s Varsity Basketball Team won the 2009 Sectional 52 Champions. Congratulations to Miss Button and the Math Bowl Team for receiving 2nd place in their division at the Math Bowl competition. Caston Elementary recently held their Spelling Bee. Braden Moss, a sixth-grader, was the sixth-grade and overall champion. Fourth-grader Megan Evans was the overall runner-up and fourth grade champion. Samuel Rhymer was the fifth-grade champion.

2/3/09 - Students Skylar Powlen and Erica Zartman were named as finalists for the Lilly Grant. Wrestlers Will Holloway, Dave McMenamin, Graham Redweik and Austin Ault have earned the right to participate in the Logan Regional on Saturday. Art teacher Kathy Zentz was honored by the Cass County Art Alliance last week.
