Liberty Township Community Center (P. 2)

(Return to "Liberty Township Community Center")

July 6th, 2008

Dear Potential Contributor,

Fulton, Indiana is the picture of a small town. A filling station, a barber shop and several small businesses make up the ‘strip’ that is Main Street.  Citizens are found on their front porches most evenings, manning their ‘posts,’ watching cars pass through town.  It is often said when giving directions to our town, “Don’t blink! You’ll miss us!”

Though we may be short on acreage and population, (a mere 326 truth be told), we are not short on heart.  Our people share a common goal: taking pleasure in the simple things; gathering together in the spirit of celebrating life in a small community where everyone does know your name.  Throughout the summer months, citizens are often found in our local park, enjoying a free concert or a fundraising dinner, discussing predictions for the year’s harvest over fish and chips.  The heart of our community no doubt lies in our park, where it is obvious that children are at the top of our list of priorities. Many new pieces of playground equipment, a stage and other park amenities have been added in recent years, thanks to the hard work of our park board in applying for grants.  Our little league fields are well maintained, complete with their own batting cages. Every inch of our park is utilized by our citizens, young and old.

As a life-long citizen of this incredible town, I cannot help but reflect on a life well-lived. I have enjoyed the simple life.  Yet, the world I grew up in is very different from today’s world.  Fulton is not the same thriving community it once was.  Our children are now subject to a very competitive and influential world that will either make them or break them.  And quite frankly, I fear that the children in our small community lack the opportunities necessary to compete with the youth from other cities, where opportunities abound.  I have grown to know and appreciate that hard work builds character.  With that in mind, several citizens have banded together and dedicated themselves to the hard work of bettering our community, in order to better our future.

The plan is simple: to create a center where opportunities can flourish, where our citizens can continue to gather in friendship, and where we can work together to better our future.  A community center would be an ideal location for our working citizens to gather together for classes and workshops which would provide them with the knowledge and skills necessary to stay competitive in today’s economy.  But most importantly, it would create a haven for our youth to meet for fellowship and education.  A center such as this would no doubt “keep them out of trouble” by creating sports leagues and after-school programs designed to draw them in, engage them, and mold them into the future we hope to create.  Our children are our future, and therefore they should be the focus of our efforts.

A lifetime in a small town affords me the opportunity to leave behind a legacy.  A life well lived is full of stories that will be told, hopefully reporting strong character and a loving spirit.  I can only hope that my grandchildren will tell stories of me that will influence the way they live their lives. I hope that my example will guide their decisions, and will mold them into future thriving citizens of this community.  Fortunately, I have found another way to leave a positive legacy behind.  I have decided to donate to a cause that will no doubt make a difference in the lives of my grandchildren, and their children.  I have pledged my support to the building of the Liberty Township Community Center, which will create opportunities for the children of our town, and help them to become contributors and competitors in our world.  I have touched the future, simply by writing a check. I encourage others in my community and elsewhere to make a difference, to pledge their support with any dollar amount.  A pledge will not only bring our community one step closer to building this center, it will bring us closer to a better future.

Sincerely,
Barbara Williams - Hattery

 thank you….

We offer our sincerest thanks to those who have pledged their support to our cause.  Without you, our dreams would never be fulfilled.  Everyone can dream, but without hard work and dedication, dreams are only ideas; they become a reality only when people come together with a common goal and a plan of action. You are a part of that plan, and your actions have brought us one step closer to a brighter future.  In the words of one citizen, you “have touched the future, simply by writing a check.”

Once again, thank you. We encourage you to continue to rally support for this community center, to spread the word that this center will create opportunities that will not be realized by any other means.  By spreading the word, you will be spreading hope. Our community is tightly woven, and so we can only weave a better future together.
